But of course, the whole premise that God is love begins with the premise that God IS. He has to exist in order to be anything.
I spent a lot of time in college wrestling with this idea, and really it’s a topic for another whole blog. So I’ll just give you a few resources that have been helpful to me. My two favorite books on the topic are by former atheists who share their journeys from unbelief to belief.
- Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis (especially the first section)
- The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel
Beyond the intellectual aspect of God, the main reason I believe he exists is that I have experienced him in my life. I have been affected, changed, sustained by his power and his presence.
If you question the existence of God, I challenge you to do two things with an open mind:
- Read one or both of the books mentioned above.
- Ask him if he exists. Put him to the test. Challenge him to show up in your life.
If you have done these two things and truly don’t believe God exists, the conversation is already over. You probably shouldn’t read this blog because we are on different planets.
But for people who can allow that God might possibly exist, the next thing they usually say is, “I couldn’t believe in a God who would do X or allow Y or be Z.”
And that's what this blog is really about.
So if you can imagine that somewhere out there, just possibly, there might be a God -- even if you don't understand who he is or what the h*** he's letting happen here on earth, please stick around.
We should talk.
So let's begin the conversation, in the comments box below. Please share your journey.
Where do you stand today with respect to God? And what has brought you to this point?
